Westminster School Orchestra Program
Our mission at Westminster School is to provide students with a classical education in all aspects of their studies. In line with this goal, the orchestra program at Westminster School begins in the 3rd grade with instruction in violin, viola, and cello, with bass offered beginning in 5th grade.
Symphonette is our training orchestra designed for beginning students in strings (violin, viola, cello, bass) and woodwinds (clarinet, flute). Symphonette is available to all students in 3rd – 8th grades and will meet once per week on Thursdays during Flex period, 2:30PM-3:05PM. In this orchestra, students will focus on learning to play as an ensemble, begin to learn string or woodwind repertoire, and focus on individual technique. Symphonette participants will be transferred to Philharmonic Orchestra based on individual progress. Symphonette will perform in two concerts each year.
Philharmonic Orchestra is our advanced orchestra, open to experienced players in grades 3-8 who meet proficiency requirements. Philharmonic will meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:20AM – 8:00AM.. Philharmonic Orchestra provides opportunities to develop precision and performance skills within a larger ensemble. Additionally, this group emphasizes literature, historical contributions, and improving musical knowledge of styles and technique. The Philharmonic Orchestra will play in at least three concerts per year, including a festival assessment.
Students will receive a weekly 30-minute lesson individually or in a small group setting (2-3 students) with a professional instructor. Technique lessons will meet on a rotating schedule during the school day. Students will be taught how to play notes, rhythms, bowings, and/or the skills unique to his/her particular instrument. Students taking private lesson instruction in violin, viola, cello, bass, clarinet, and flute outside of school will also be able to participate in the orchestras at Westminster School.
