Drum Circle


Instruction provided by: Heather Johnston, Piano Specialist, Lessons In Your Home, Washington D.C.

Eligibility: K-4

Schedule: Wednesday

Enrollment: 6 Minimum, 10 Maximum

Attire: School uniform

Description: NEW Drum Circle & Percussion Exploration class at Westminster School!  In this group music class, students will have the opportunity to survey different percussion instruments and techniques in a small ensemble with individual roles for each instrument.  Not only will learning the role of each instrument in the circle be emphasized, but also the art of ensemble, or playing with other musicians.  Students will gain experience playing a variety of instruments, including bongos, maracas, and more!  Drum circles create a chance for students to channel their musical creativity through a combined approach of improvisation and understanding basic rhythmic notation.

Classes will combine introduction of instruments through a short lecture and interactive playing.  Time in the class will also be dedicated to group playing and experimentation.  At the conclusion of the class, students will be featured in a showcase.

What Students Will Learn:

  1. Recognition of a variety of hand percussion instruments & their history
  2. Fundamentals of correct playing technique for each instrument
  3. Understanding of basic rhythmic notation
  4. Understanding the roles of different instruments in a small ensemble setting
  5. Fundamentals of improvisation and expression
  6. Creativity through music & group interaction

 

Jazz/Ballet 


Instruction provided by:  5-6-7-8 Dance Martha Krabill, Owner & Artistic Director

Eligibility: Grades K - 4

Schedule: K-4: Thursday

Enrollment: Minimum 5, Maximum 14

Attire: Dance and/or athletic attire, ballet and/or tennis shoes

Description: This combination class offers elements of both ballet and jazz. The ballet portion focuses on the basic ballet positions, terminology and movement. Students will learn a variety of ballet movements including balance, jumping, turns, age appropriate stretches and basic turns. The jazz portion of the class is a fun way to learn about proper dance technique, body and muscle control while moving along to a variety of different music genres. Our class focuses on a proper warm-up, stretching, leaps and jumps, dance terminology, turns and age appropriate combinations. Students will be featured in a showcase and Certificate of Participation on the last day of each class.


 

Piano

Schedule: Monday – Friday           

Enrollment: 30 minute individual lessons, 4:00 – 4:30 or 4:30 – 5:00

Attire: School uniform

Description:  Lessons In Your Home is partnering with Westminster School to offer a fun, traditional piano curriculum focused on each individual student.  Our program includes private, one-on-one instruction with a professional piano teacher where every student receives customized attention at the pace with which they are most comfortable.  Students will learn to establish note reading, fundamentals of music theory such as pitch and rhythm identification, develop recognition of ascending and descending musical patterns.  In addition, students will practice correct posture, including hand positioning, and utilization of fine motor skills.  Students will be given assignments to be practiced throughout the week at home in preparation for the next lesson, which will be positively reinforced by his/her piano teacher. Students will be featured in a showcase at the conclusion of the class.  


 

Soccer


Instruction provided by:  Chris Jennings, NXT Level Futbol Academy and Head Varsity Boys’ Soccer Coach at Bishop O’Connell High School

Eligibility: K-4

Schedule: Monday, Wednesday          

Attire: Athletic wear, proper outerwear, shin guards, socks, indoor soccer shoes or tennis shoes

Description: Students will pass and kick their way through fun drills, participate in small-sided games, enjoy the thrill of goal scoring and many other exciting soccer-themed activities. Sessions are suitable for players of all skill levels as our goal is to help foster children’s love for the beautiful game!  NXT Level Futbol Academy provides experienced and successful coaches to nurture individual skills and teach the game as a whole.  The NXT Level staff has experience participating and working with European and Major League Soccer clubs, NCAA colleges, private high school soccer programs, and travel soccer youth club organizations.


Zumba/Salsa Dance

Enrollment: Minimum 5, Maximum 14          

Attire: Dance and/or athletic attire, ballet and/or tennis shoes

Description: This exciting, high-energy class combines dance and aerobic exercise inspired by dance moves from various styles like Zumba, Latin and Salsa, as well as, muscle building exercises. Students will have fun and learn exciting rhythms set to upbeat music. No partner is necessary for this class. The last class will feature a 15-minute presentation to family and friends and the students will receive a Certificate of Participation.
