Westminster School welcomes you to its 50th Anniversary Year!  This milestone will be marked in many ways throughout the year, culminating in a Golden Jubilee on May 19, 2012.  Alumni and their parents, former staff members, and friends will be invited to join current families for the grand event.  Look for special announcements throughout the year, leading up to the exciting finale at the Golden Jubilee.

Since Mrs. Goll opened an all-day kindergarten class in fall 1962, Westminster has grown and improved steadily in both its program and physical plant.  The founder’s dream of providing a classical education, one which both challenges and enriches children to their capacity, has become an extraordinary school—a beacon of educational excellence which has nurtured thousands of students toward accomplished and joyous lives.  The school’s trustees, administration, faculty, and parent volunteers are determined to crown its 50 years of achievement with the erection of a state-of-the-art athletic field, a building addition to house the preschool and other growing programs, and an ever-expanding sense of what is possible for our school and community. We hope that you will join us in this great endeavor, and in the celebration of 50 years of classical excellence!

Spirits Soar with the Headmaster’s Talent Show

What brings to the same stage a classical quartet, a hip-hop dancer, a Rubik’s cube phenomenon, a country singer, and more?  The first annual Headmaster’s Talent Show!  On Friday, February 4, the entire school gathered to enjoy the special talents, skill, and courage of 13 student volunteers from grades 5 – 8.  The presentation featured a variety of impressive and delightful performances, plus a mini-exhibition by an accomplished painter.  Framed by a showcase presentation in the style of a 50’s-era television variety show, complete with theme music, tailored visual backdrops, and a joke-cracking host, the student performers enjoyed their moment in the spotlight before an enthusiastic and supportive audience.

The idea for the talent show was born in the 8th-grade enrichment class co-taught by Mr. Glover (Headmaster) and Ms. Glazier (Assistant Head of School).  Encouraging the students to discover their dreams and turn them into reality is an important part of enrichment class (and the school’s mission).  Some of the 8th grade students performed for the class, and they were so impressive that Mr. Glover invited them to share their talents with the entire school.  Soon the ranks swelled with eager performers and the show was on.  Mr. Glover turned his own talent and effort into producing and emceeing an unforgettable event.  The end result:  outstanding performances by one and all, a joyous experience for the students, staff, and parents in attendance, and a surge of confidence and courage for those students who took the chance—and made one little dream come true.

On Tuesday, January 24, the second grade was welcomed into the upper-school science lab to learn about the differences between physical and chemical changes in matter. Students viewed demonstrations involving physical changes including pounding clay, shredding paper, and observing water boil over a Bunsen burner. Mr. Majewski demonstrated an exciting chemical reaction in which oxygen was released into the air which helped a controlled fire start in the classroom! Students all enjoyed the bubbling power of a simple acid-base reaction which they conducted themselves and all participants went home with a special chemical slime that they mixed with the energy from their fingertips. Great work junior scientists!

"My favorite part was when Mr. Majewski lit a stick on fire, blew it out, stuck it in salt
and that stuff that helps to heal a cut (hydrogen peroxide), and it lit back on fire!
That was so fun." ~

Westminster School is excited about plans to install an on-campus athletic field to take the place of a nearby county-owned field which has been used in the past. In 2009, Westminster acquired the two-acre plot of land adjacent to school property for this purpose. Engineering plans are underway for a state-of-the art field, including durable, quick-drying artificial turf and an underground water storage and drainage system to accommodate rain run-off and protect against down-stream erosion. The field will accommodate both soccer and softball games, as well as daily P.E. activities. Construction plans associated with the athletic field also include tiered seating for viewers, relocation of the school playground to be adjacent to the new field, as well as additional sidewalks linking the field with guest parking and other school sites. Construction is planned to begin in the Spring of 2012.
