Remedial Academic Sessions

Academic review classes are offered only to enrolled Westminster students.  Because these courses are designed to review Westminster's specific curriculum and to prepare students for the coming year, the classes would not be appropriate for non-Westminster students.  Registration forms for these classes may be downloaded here.  Parents are asked to drop off the form and payment at the Westminster School office or to submit by mail.

 

Please note: Westminster School Camps and Enrichment Classes will take place on Monday, July 5. No fees will be prorated for campers choosing not to attend on this day.

Review of Kindergarten

This course is specifically designed to provide students with a review of the Open Court Reading and Math programs. In reading, readiness skills are emphasized along with work on beginning and ending consonant sounds, word attack skills, blending, and beginning reading. Math concentrates on beginning addition and subtraction. Handwriting practice includes correct letter formation, with emphasis on proper pencil grip and paper position.

This course serves as a foundation for those students who have not had French in school or who need a few weeks of review at this grade level. It emphasizes proper pronunciation, normal beginning conversation topics, and the essentials of French I grammar.

Summer Fun Camp
TIME : 8:30 a.m. — 5:30 p.m.

This program, newly extended to a full seven weeks, will enthrall campers with morning FunShops (see below) chock full of fascinating new skills and activities, followed by afternoon outings, adventures, and activities. (Registrations are also accepted for one or two of the two-week sessions of Summer Fun Camp. However, registration for the full seven weeks will be honored first if enrolled by April 30.) Each camper will spend an hour and a half in each class in the morning.

All Sports

This sports and fun-filled adventure camp is loaded with activity and excitement. The perfect camp for kids who want to experience a variety of sports. Campers will develop skills in basketball, football, baseball, soccer, and more. This camp is designed for beginning and intermediate players, with an emphasis on safety.

Burst of Creativity

Get your creative juices flowing!  Campers will be inspired to create numerous personal expressions through different art forms. Projects will include scrapbooking, paper arts and crafts, paint, clay, yarn, and other media. The possibilities are endless.

Art

Pottery, painting, and murals!  These are just a few of the exciting activities which will be explored during a variety of hands-on projects.  Students will learn about each particular medium, plan and create their work, and proudly take home all artwork upon completion.

Students will learn how to audition for a theatrical production.  Participants should come prepared to act, sing, move and have fun.  They will select a short monologue and song to work on during the workshop.  We will then explore acting and moving through improvisational theater games and will end the workshop with a performance of the material we have worked on.

Crazy Creatures

This class will feature the study of strange and amazing animals.  Campers will learn of the many adaptations that help mammals, reptiles, birds, and fish survive in their respective habitats.  Campers will be engaged in a variety of hands-on activities, including laboratory science lessons, craft projects, educational games, and outdoor nature observation which will allow them to experience animals like never before!  Whether it’s cute and cuddly or small and slimy, campers will learn that all animals are important for life on Earth.

International Cooking

Let’s get cooking!  Under the guidance of our resident gourmand, the young chefs will learn to make and taste a variety of delicious dishes from around the globe.  Recipes come from countries such as Italy, China, England, and Mexico.  Come prepared with an appetite to learn!

Book Club

Dig into summer reading!!  Campers will focus on a summer reading book, elements of a novel, including character and plot. They will expand their understanding through activities that relate to the novel, such as arts and crafts and watching a film version of the work. Writing will also be incorporated.  Strategies for taking notes and remembering details will be taught.  This class is a great way to kick off your summer reading and learn how to get the most out of each book you read.

Sign Language/Yoga

Sign Language: Taught a certified and professional interpreter, this class will introduce students to the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) used by the Deaf Community, including basic vocabulary, fingerspelling, and grammatical non-manual signals. It will develop gestural skills as a foundation for ASL enhancement and introduce cultural knowledge and increases understanding of the Deaf Community. Campers will experience sign language through games, songs, and activities.

Yoga: Students will learn yoga and relaxation techniques to develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility, and coordination.  They will learn how to carry these techniques beyond the yoga class and into their daily lives to help manage stress.  Guided visualization will also be used to help instill a sense of calm and peace as well as a oneness with nature.  Basic poses and routines will be taught.  The ultimate goal of the class is to unite mind, body, and spirit.

Drama

Campers will practice improvisation techniques as well as work together to create short vignettes using themes familiar to them and appropriate for their age. Learning to project, express emotion, overcome inhibitions and to write and perform an original script will all be part of the camp. This camp will emphasize creativity, drama techniques and teamwork. These skills are not only important for the theater, but also for everyday life. Come join the fun!

Technology

Participants will use Power Point and Microsoft Photo Editor to create a variety of high-impact, individualized presentations.  Campers will learn to combine photos, graphics, and sound in their presentations.

Marine Biology

During the summer marine biology camp, participants will get a hands-on, experiential glimpse into the undersea world.  They will learn about a variety of ocean-dwelling creatures, including sharks, mollusks, boney fishes, and coral polyps, while exploring how all of these creatures (and more) are essential to the marine ecosystem.  Environmental issues will be discussed in order to understand how humans both help and harm our oceans and the Chesapeake Bay watershed.  Build a crystal coral reef, design your own fish, dissect a squid, and learn to love our oceans this summer during the summer marine biology camp at Westminster!

Young fingers will soon be flying around the computer keyboard, learning to create a variety of attractive and self-expressive products using Power Point and photo editor software.  Campers will learn to combine photos, graphics, and sound in their presentations.

Adventures in Writing

Campers entering grades 1-3 will enjoy an exciting daily activity such as cooking, outdoor hiking, sports, art activities and/or puppet theater. Campers will then take their real-life adventures and compose writings, reflections, poems, and recipes related to their activity of the day. At the end of the week, campers will bring home a "memoir," about their summer adventures, complete with personal illustrations.

Outdoor Adventures

Come have fun with us outdoors this summer! We will explore all that Fairfax County’s outdoor parks have to offer. From hiking beside the Bull Run River to bouldering at Great Falls, we will be embarking daily on exciting outdoor adventures. We will learn about Fairfax County’s indigenous plant and animal species while practicing conservation and preservation. Students should come prepared with sturdy walking shoes, hats, water, and plenty of sunscreen.

Option 1: American Girl

Bring your best (little) friend to camp with you this summer.  Girls will spend the week learning about Samantha, an American Girl from Victorian times.  Campers will make calling cards, learn emboidery, make Victorian greeting cards and treats, and have a chance to dress up on the last day of camp for High Tea.

Option 2: Kids Pro Soccer

Kids Pro Soccer is a well-established soccer academy featuring coaches and professional players providing exceptional training for ages 2 and up, that has proven to be successful with players now playing Series 1 Soccer in Europe.  Younger players will truly enjoy soccer and get to know soccer through fun games in a non-competitive setting.  This camp focuses on a variety of training techniques that are used to enhance quickness, improve balance and agility, develop speed, and build confidence.

Camp will take place in the Westminster School gymnasium.

Percy Jackson/The Lightning Thief

Explore the world of Perseus "Percy" Jackson in this fun-filled camp that celebrates all things Percy. The campers will celebrate the world of Greek mythology and how it inspires the Percy Jackson series. Campers will explore the characters and plots of the various books. Creativity will abound through various writing and art projects related to the series. Become a demi-god and jump into Camp Half-Blood with Percy!

Writing Workshop

This workshop will encourage and help all young writers to create their own stories. Writers will work individually and with peers. The workshop culminates in a bound book version of the stories, complete with the children’s illustrations. The workshop will help students with their mechanics, the writing process, and the overall development of their writing. Activities adjusted for each age group.

Vehicles and Engineering with LEGOS

Using very advanced LEGO® parts and pieces, this very exciting class has students building 13 different vehicles capped off with a final project. Some of these vehicles haven`t even been invented in the "real" world, yet! Projects include, Adjustable Crane, Bobcat, Flipper Car, Forklift, Inch- worm Car, Motor Cycle, Motorized Wheelchair, Rally (race) Car, Riding Mower, Scissor Car, Space Cruiser, Steamroller, and Submarine.

Junior Engineering with LEGOS

Using very advanced LEGO® parts and pieces, this class is appropriate for children ages 5, 6 and 7-years-old. Children will learn by doing. Course covers gears, levers, wheels, axles, structures, forces and simple machines. For this age group, the building projects are simple enough for students to do well yet hard enough to challenge them.
