Why should I send my child to your school? Westminster offers a superior elementary and middle-school education based on an accelerated curriculum and high achievement standards. The rich curriculum, focused academics, and traditional environment of respect, courtesy, responsibility, and warmth provide a significant alternative to the public school system. Kindergarten-2nd grade students get a strong start with a phonics-based reading program, a math program that stresses reasoning and a solid grounding in math facts, hands-on science, an introduction to history and geography, French, music, art, PE, library, and Junior Great Books. The core curriculum for grades 3-8 is enhanced by the addition of Classical Studies, which trace the history, culture, art, and literature of Western Civilization. Upper school students add Latin, and Algebra. Westminster’s emphasis on the arts (providing training in studio art, music, orchestra, dance, poetry, and drama) ensures that all students benefit from the self-exploration and self-expression of creative endeavor. Premier among these is the Drama Program in which all students participate each year. The repeated experience of preparation and public performance helps students develop self-confidence, poise, and self-expression. The Drama Program puts the final polish on the knowledgeable, courteous, responsible, and diligent graduates of the Westminster program.
Why do students like your school? Students enjoy the after-school Athletic Program; the many field trips and special assemblies; the aesthetic environment; the celebrations of curriculum, such as Egyptian Day, Science Week, and Sports Day; the drama presentations; and, most of all, the sense of close community and caring possible in a small school.
Do the students wear uniforms? Yes, students in all grades wear a school uniform every day. Students in grades 3-8 change into athletic uniforms for P.E. class.
Do you offer after-school care? After-School Care is available every school day from 3:00-5:45 p.m for students in grades K-8.
Do you provide transportation? Door-to-door bus service is available to most parts of Fairfax County. Some families choose to participate in car pools whose organization is facilitated by the school.
How long has your school been established and is it accredited? Westminster School was established in 1962. It is a fully accredited member of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), and is a member of the Association of Independent Schools of Greater Washington (AISGW).
What is the background of the school director? Ellis Glover has been the Headmaster of Westminster School since 1992. Educated in the classics and humanities, he served for 16 years as Assistant Director of Westminster School prior to taking over the headship upon the death of the school’s founder, Jane Goll.
Are you planning any changes? Plans include the development of an on-site athletic field. Long-range plans include a building addition to house a preschool and expand office and lower-school classroom spaces. Westminster will open a preschool in fall, 2010, to be temporarily housed in a nearby leased facility.
Are you full? What are the provisions for new registrants? How much is tuition? Limited openings are available in some grades. Registration is limited to 18 students per class (2 classes per grade). Registration for the fall semester is open to new families in mid-February. Tours are available at any time upon request. Tuition for 2009-2010, in grades K–8, is $17,200, well below the median for independent schools in the greater Washington area. Various payment plans are offered.
Are there special requirements for admission to your school? Admission to kindergarten is based on birth date, order of application, and readiness testing. For grades 1-8, admission is based on order of application, the results of a qualifying exam, a writing sample, teacher evaluation, and an interview with parents and child.
